ANOTHER GRAND FINAL WRAP - HAS A NICE RING TO IT...
27 Aug 18
Well what can you say, another weekend, Another Premiership in the bank…
No pressure boys but the Ladies of West’s have delivered in Spades…
Preston City Oval was the place to be Sunday as our Senior Women took on a Red Hot Montmorency who had charged to the Grand Final on the back off some very impressive form including a final round upset win against our Rooster Girls…
But we were out for Redemption after last year’s loss in the big one still stinging in the hearts, our girls were never going to let this one slide. Well there may have been a moment or two of doubt in running, lets be honest half way through the third and we were all starting to wonder…
A late goal, just before (debatable, depending on the colour of your jumper) the three quarter time siren reduced the margin back to just a point, giving us the impetus needed.
A controlled but passionate address from the super coach and a final quarter to rank amongst the best played by a team in the Red White and Blue produced the desire, effort and commitment required to bring home the cup.
A raucous crowd cheered every, bump, mark, kick and goal, on the way to victory. It was not easy, but then winning premierships should not be easy. To Polly and his amazing group of ladies, Congratulations! You have come a long way in two short years. Enjoy the feeling , the party was going in full swing when your author snuck away for a bit of peace and quite after a hectic weekend. There just might be a sore head or two on Monday morning, none more so than the supercoach.
Well Done Ladies!
On Saturday the curtain came down on the home and away season for the Men, with Greensborough paying us a visit. The day started with the under 19’s in the early kick off.
Its been a challenging season for the lads this year, again they showed up with grit and determination and while the wins have not come, our future is looking bright. We have some talented young men is this team as evidenced by the standard of play from the boys when called upon as the 23rd man and outside of that, the straight selections in the senior side when injuries and poor form left an opening or two.
The boys finished the game Saturday with just 15 on the field as injuries took there toll, but they didn’t give up. Can’t remember the final margin – don’t care! Really so proud of the these boys, for fronting up each week.
Keep the heads up, and enjoy your break, we hope to have you all back for preseason later this year, no rest for the wicked is there! And of course with some reinforcement in numbers from this years under 17’s boys joining the senior arm of the club for the 2019 season we look forward to a great year. Again well done you never gave up and we can’t ask for more than that.
Then George and his boys continued on the winning way with yet another outstanding performance – well Outstanding might not be the right choice of words. In fact for the first three quarters you would have thought the boys in green were the ladder topping runaway side, but a brilliant final quarter with Bona again showing his class and with Perfetto putting the icing on the cake late the boys got the chocolates … workman like would sum it up.
“On Top for a Purpose” was the message from George to the boys post game.. They are still trying to work that one out, also his statement during the week – “we’re not resting anybody, we don’t mess with form, but if you have a niggle then we’ll rest you” was another to ponder over. The boy’s now get to rest up with the “Reward or Purpose” for finishing is a weeks rest.
George won’t be letting the boys rest on their laurels. Training will be as intense as ever, and the boys will be hanging on every word (assuming the interpreter is not taking the week off) as preparations step up for the business end. Congrats on a fantastic season so far boys, but the job’s not done and nothing but a Flag will be satisfactory from here…
The seniors rounded out preparations for a tilt at the title with a solid victory. After an even first quarter we edged ahead by half time and put the result to bed in the third, the final margin a comfortable 44 points. The attention turns now to the business end of the season as we head to Preston City Oval next Saturday for the Qualifying final clash with the Surprise packet of the season – North Heidelberg. The boys have worked hard over the home and away season to earn the double chance and set up a real shot for more Silverware for the club in 2018.
Housekeeping – Dont forget Junior Presentation Day on Saturday 15th September. See TeamApp, FB or check with your team managers for more information.
Coaching applications for all Junior sides are open and the forms are on TeamApp, the website or contact Fiona onwestprestonjfc@gmail.com for a copy.
Good luck to Rob and the boys for next week, enjoy the week off George and crew, and to the Magnificent Premiership winning Senior Women Congrats again – a brilliant effort!
And that is a Wrap.
