A DAREBIN sports club is kicking in support for local women’s football.

West Preston Lakeside Football Club will launch a senior women’s football team to compete in the inaugural season of the Northern Football League women’s competition next year.

Club president Paul McInerney said the club was in the process of inviting new players aged 17 and older, a senior coach and those just keen to help out as support staff.

“We certainly have players who are committed to play already, and are looking for more,” he said.

Mr McInerney said the AFL’s launch of its own women’s league had helped spark increased interest in female footy.

He said the inclusion of senior women in football clubs would help them grow as communities.

“It’s something that’s going to be a great addition for community clubs,” Mr McInerney said.
